We're talking about public intellectuals - someone who makes a living out of having an opinion. Perhaps it’s not a good idea for society to be designed to allow public intellectuals to be so often wrong and bear no consequences.
So I agree. But what does this look like? Many track records only make sense if you can compare them to others. How do you compare Obama and Biden, for instance
Agreed. Track records are particularly difficult in our environment because of bundled governance. It's a lot easier to understand the track record of a single-topic academic (not to say it's easy, just easier). You can imagine that if we can narrow people's focus to a smaller set of topics they're both more likely to develop expertise in/become good at their topics and easier to evaluate, and so then it just becomes a design challenge for how to evaluate them.
Not to be too Fermat, but I have an answer that won't fit within the margins of this comment box. My goal right now is to lay out the problems I aim to solve, so when I start laying out my solution, I can link to these for why I've designed my solution the way I have, and hopefully other solution designers can put forth alternative solutions that also solve the same set of problems. So I'm delighted that you agree this is a problem, because solving it is a core constraint on my thinking!
